NOTE: We are meeting at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area in Redwood Regional Park (there are many other entrances). Cell phone coverage is limited in this area, please be sure you can reach the trailhead without reception.
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5)
Distance: 4.1 miles
Elevation gain: 400 ft.
Back by popular demand! This is one of our most popular hikes each year, where we hike alongside Redwood Creek in Redwood Regional Park and search for groups of hibernating ladybugs.
Every winter, ladybugs flock to this area and settle together in large clumps as they try to stay warm during the winter months. They are easy to miss if you're not looking for them, but when you find them there are often hundreds of them within a few square feet (the banner image was taken last year during our hike).
This is a hike of moderate length, but mild gradients. It is suitable for all ages, as long as they can comfortably walk for ~2 hours.
This hike is 100% under tree cover, and is often damp and foggy during the winter months. The soil here tends to hang onto moisture, so please wear sturdy footwear that you don't mind getting a bit muddy.
We will meet at 9am at the far (north) end of the Canyon Meadow Staging Area parking lot. The hike will proceed around 9:15am after going over the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace principles.
We will aim to finish around 11 am.
Class B uniforms (Pack t-shirt, Scout hat) for your scouts if they have them. Pack t-shirts for adults encouraged but optional.
Requirement: Scout and accompanying parent must have an Annual Health Medical Record (AHMR form) on file (forms A/B1/B2) in order to hike with us. If you have not filled one out, please bring the completed form with you to the hike and hand it to Tim. This applies to all scouts, siblings, and friends if they plan to hike alongside our group.
Things to bring:
Water bottle with at least 0.5 liters of water per person
Trail snacks
Scouts: Class B uniform (Scout hat, Pack t-shirt)
Parents: Pack T-shirt if you have one
Dress in layers (water resistant jacket recommended)
Cub Scout 6 Essentials (water, snack, sun protection, first aid kit, etc)
Magnifying glasses to get a closer look at the ladybugs (optional)
Parking:
Parking is $5 at the staging area. The main paved parking lot right at the trailhead holds about 30-40 cars, but if that fills up there is a dirt overflow lot just a 1/4 mile away.
Navigation without reception:
There is little to no cell phone coverage in the canyon once you drive past Skyline Blvd.
Before leaving home: If you are using Google Maps on your smart phone, in the search bar type "ok maps" (without the quotation marks).
It will prompt you to zoom in/out to select the window you'd like to save for offline viewing. Be sure to zoom out enough to cover our hiking area, and all the way back out to the freeway.
This offline map will allow you to navigate to and from the trailhead even without any reception. The GPS location on your phone is not dependent on cell coverage, so you can still see where you are on the map.
